The Ninja Turtles (process)

I get asked about the creation process and specific techniques of stuff that I work on, and occasionally have direct examples to share. This is the Ninja Turtle picture that I did, since it is a piece of fan art and just a picture for fun, I am more willing to give away some of the magic

Here are 10 steps, I numbered them and made this a video instead of a GIF, so that you can pause it at any stage of progression. The first couple of steps consist of laying down the concrete foundation, the lineart and getting the base colors masked. Next, I nearly use the greyscale-to-color route, but I rather work monochromatically, with a hue that is relative to all the future color that will be used. This step may be the most important, since it comes from the understanding of light and defining the form of whatever you are creating. After that comes more lighting, but focusing on the smaller mountains and valleys of the form. After you are satisfied with how defined the subject is then mix in the various colors, via one of the many many ways to do so.
